Unity CTO Steps Down After 6 Months

Steve Collins, former CTO of King—the studio behind the hit game Candy Crush—has resigned from his role as Chief Technology Officer at Unity, according to company representatives. Collins was with Unity for only half a year before making the decision to step down for personal reasons.

A Unity spokesperson stated:

“Steve Collins chose to leave the company due to personal reasons. We deeply appreciate his contributions and remain confident that our engineering team will continue to move forward.”

Unity’s Ongoing Challenges Following a Turbulent Year

Unity faced a tough 2023 marked by controversial pricing policy changes that sparked backlash from many developers. These challenges led to the departure of CEO John Riccitiello and a significant round of layoffs affecting 25% of the workforce—approximately 1,800 employees.

Although the company’s situation has somewhat stabilized, many game developers remain cautious and skeptical about Unity’s full recovery.

Personal Reasons or a Sign of New Struggles?

Unity insists that Collins’ resignation is unrelated to the company’s prior difficulties. However, the departure of such a key executive after a short tenure raises questions about Unity’s stability moving forward.

Regardless, this exit represents a significant challenge for Unity as it strives to rebuild trust and grow in the fiercely competitive gaming industry.
