Microsoft Flight Simulator is already known for its stunning realism, meticulously recreating cities, terrain, and airports across the globe. But a bold new direction is on the horizon. With the Jurassic World: Archipelago expansion, players will leave behind busy runways to soar above a fictional region filled with prehistoric creatures and legendary park structures.

Developed by Orbx in collaboration with Universal Products & Experiences, this expansion brings the entire Muertes Archipelago from the Jurassic World films to life. It marks Orbx’s first foray into licensed content—and they’ve chosen one of pop culture’s most iconic franchises to debut with.

The expansion recreates five main islands: Isla Nublar, Isla Sorna, Isla Tacaño, Isla Pena, and Isla Muerta. Familiar to movie fans around the world, these locations are now explorable from the sky, with detailed landmarks, facilities, and terrain. But it’s not just static scenery—this world feels alive, populated with human activity, high-tech infrastructure, and of course, dinosaurs.

The highlight of the expansion is undoubtedly the dinosaurs. These aren’t just decorative models—they move, react, and integrate directly into the flying experience. You might spot a Tyrannosaurus rex roaring through the jungle, watch Brachiosauruses grazing in the sun, or fly over a camouflaged Velociraptor stalking through ancient ruins.

Orbx describes Isla Nublar as fully operational, with monorail systems, visitor centers, helipads, and research facilities buzzing with activity. In contrast, Isla Sorna is desolate and reclaimed by nature, adding suspense and danger. This contrast adds narrative depth, giving players a mix of awe and unease as they explore.

Rather than offering just scenic flights, the expansion introduces interactive challenges and missions. Players can transport VIP guests, fly tourist helicopters, deliver supplies to remote research bases, and even respond to emergencies like escaped dinosaurs or violent storms. It’s one of the few times Microsoft Flight Simulator has embraced adventure-style gameplay with real stakes.

Audio design also plays a major role. Expect to hear thunderous dinosaur footsteps, the ambient buzz of jungle wildlife, and iconic roars straight from the Jurassic films. Combined with the visuals, it’s a deeply immersive experience that pushes the limits of what flight simulation can be.

The expansion also includes fully customized airstrips and helipads across all five islands. These facilities are designed for light aircraft, helicopters, and STOL (short takeoff and landing) planes. Players can tweak time, weather, and dynamic events to shift the tone—from a peaceful daytime tour to a nighttime storm flight in chaos.

Jurassic World: Archipelago is expected to release in late August or early September 2025 for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. It will be available via OrbxDirect and the in-game marketplace. A version for Flight Simulator 2020 is also in development and will follow.

Pricing hasn’t been confirmed, but based on similar premium DLCs, it’s expected to cost between $20–$30 USD. With its scale, visual quality, and Jurassic World branding, the expansion is positioned as a premium but worthwhile addition for fans looking to explore a whole new dimension of flight simulation.
